South Pasadena Senior Wins $50K Edison Scholars Award

South Pasadena High School senior Victoria Lee plans to major in computer science when she graduates, hoping to reduce the spread of misinformation by using advanced technology to help cross-reference credible resources.
Lee’s passion for STEM education was recognized by Edison International, which selected the senior as a winner of the 2024 Edison Scholars Award and a $50,000 college scholarship.
“Congratulations, Victoria! We are excited to see what your future holds, and we’re proud of all you have accomplished at South Pasadena High School,” South Pasadena Unified School District said in a statement.
Lee is one of 30 high schools seniors who earned the award given to students who live in Southern California Edison’s service area.
Applicants must be high school seniors with at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA, plan to pursue studies in the STEM fields at a four-year accredited college or university and show financial need.
“Victoria recognizes the rampant growth of ‘fake’ news across all topics on the internet and wants to advance her education in artificial intelligence, machine learning and language processing to help cross-reference credible sources. Her goal is to create an efficient and accurate model that can significantly reduce the spread of misinformation,” a statement on the SoCal Edison’s website said.
Edison International has awarded more than $15 million in scholarships to 760 students through the program since 2006.
