Hwang, Cortes, Kowal Score Winners for Tigers

The South Pasadena High School varsity boys’ soccer team shut out host Charter Oak High in Covina 1-0 in a nonleague game on Dec. 8.
Senior captain Joe Hwang scored the deciding goal, while junior captain Emilio Gonzalez-Mosqueda was credited with an assist. Senior Sawyer Fox recorded four shots on goal, junior Kasra Ghaffari, junior Ethan Kung, sophomore Leo Sanchez and freshman Jackai Williams each had one shot on target, and junior Austin Hwang and sophomore Mick Dubester each made one save.
The Tigers (2-2 overall) will visit La Cañada for a Rio Hondo League game on Dec. 15 at 5 p.m. before visiting Temple City on Jan. 10.


GIRLS’ SOCCER

South Pasadena High School sophomore Anna Kowal scored one goal to help the Tigers beat Canyon Springs High in their Best in the West Tournament opener on Dec 9

The South Pas varsity girls’ team posted a pair of wins during the opening weekend of the Best in the West Tournament on Dec. 9.
The Tigers edged Castaic 1-0 to end the first day of tournament action. Sophomore Amada Cortes tallied one goal, while senior captain Zoe Kim recorded an assist.
SPHS posted a 1-0 victory over Canyon Springs High of Moreno Valley in its tournament opener. Sophomore Anna Kowal scored the deciding goal, while junior Saidbh Byrne was credited with an assist.
The Tigers lost to visiting La Salle College Preparatory of Pasadena 1-0 in a nonleague match on Dec. 7.
South Pasadena (3-1) will host La Cañada for a Rio Hondo League game on Dec. 15 at 4 p.m. before hosting Temple City on Jan. 10.
