Boys’ Volleyball: Lafferty Spearheads SPHS in Sweep of La Cañada

The South Pasadena High School varsity boys’ volleyball team swept host La Cañada, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23, in a Rio Hondo League match on April 9.
Sophomore Conan Lafferty racked up 13 kills, 13 digs, three aces, two assists and one block, while junior Jack Pellerin registered 10 kills, three blocks and one dig. Senior Ian Chang finished with 23 assists, three digs and one ace, senior Ryan Estanislao contributed 17 digs and one assist, and senior Nigel Mundara was credited with 12 assists and five digs. Junior James Dowd recorded eight kills, two blocks, two digs and one ace, while junior Martin Walsh produced six kills, three digs, two aces and one block. Junior Jacob Chuang tallied four blocks and three kills, senior Isaiah Hyun had three kills, one block and one dig, and sophomore Wyatt Morimoto-Woo collected two digs and one assist.
The Tigers lost to Monta Vista High of Cupertino in three games, 22-25, 25-19, 10-15, in their Justin Ebner Memorial Tournament finale on April 6.
Dowd produced 12 kills, three blocks and two digs, while Mundara contributed 14 assists, one ace and one dig. Pellerin finished with seven blocks, three kills and two digs, Lafferty recorded five digs, three kills and one block, and Chuang registered six blocks, three kills and two digs. Chang was credited with eight assists, three aces, three digs and two kills, while Walsh tallied eight digs and two kills. Freshman Liam Johnson chipped in two kills, one block and one dig, while Estanislao collected five digs and two aces. Hyun had one kill and one dig, while Morimoto-Woo had one dig.
South Pasadena picked up a three-game victory over Harbor High of Santa Cruz, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10, in a tournament match on April 6.
Lafferty racked up 19 digs, 10 kills and one assist, while Dowd finished with 10 kills and one dig. Chang tallied 15 assists, six digs, one kill and one ace, while Mundara recorded 14 assists, four digs and one ace. Chuang produced seven kills, five blocks and one dig, Pellerin registered six kills, four blocks and two digs, and Walsh chipped in four kills, four digs, one ace and one block. Estanislao contributed seven digs and three assists, Morimoto-Woo collected five digs, and Hyun had one dig.
South Pasadena was swept by Homestead High of Cupertino, 21-25, 17-25, in a tournament match on April 6.
Dowd recorded five kills, Chuang registered three kills, three blocks and one dig, and Walsh contributed two kills, one block and one dig. Lafferty finished with five digs, one kill and one block, while Estanislao produced seven digs and one ace. Mundara tallied five assists and one dig, while Chang was credited with five assists. Pellerin made two blocks, while Morimoto-Woo collected two digs. Sophomore Kyle Kirchen and freshman Lorcan Swift each had one kill, while Hyun had one block.
The Tigers secured a three-game victory over Los Gatos, 22-25, 25-12, 15-7, to end the first day of tournament play on April 5.
Dowd produced six kills, three blocks, two digs and one ace, while Lafferty contributed six kills, two aces, two blocks and two digs. Walsh tallied six digs and three kills, while Chuang finished with three kills, two blocks and one dig. Chang recorded nine assists, three aces, three digs and two kills, Mundara was credited with nine assists and three digs, and Pellerin registered three blocks, two kills and one dig. Estanislao had four digs, one kill and one ace, Hyun had three digs, one kill and one block, and Swift had one kill and one block. Kirchen made one block, while Johnson chipped in one kill.
South Pasadena lost in three games to Valley Christian High of San Jose, 25-21, 13-25, 11-15, in a tournament match on April 5.
Lafferty finished with nine kills, three digs and one block, Pellerin tallied six kills, two blocks, one dig and one assist, and Dowd contributed six kills, two blocks and one dig. Mundara and Chang each registered 10 assists, two digs and one ace, while Estanislao produced seven digs, two assists and one ace. Walsh chipped in three kills and two digs, Chuang recorded two digs, one kill and one block, and Swift collected two digs.
South Pasadena suffered a three-game loss against Clovis West High of Fresno, 25-21, 20-25, 15-17, in its tournament opener on April 5.
Lafferty tallied eight kills, three digs, one ace and one block, Dowd chipped in seven kills, two digs, one ace and one block, and Pellerin recorded five kills, one block and one dig. Chang was credited with 14 assists, two digs and one ace, Estanislao finished with 10 digs, one ace and one assist, and Mundara registered nine assists and five digs. Walsh produced eight digs and three kills, while Chuang contributed two kills, one block and one dig. Johnson had one kill, one dig and one assist, while Swift chipped in one kill.
The Tigers (13-12 overall, 5-1 in league) will visit Temple City for their regular-season finale on April 16 before the CIF Southern Section playoffs begin the following week.
