Track and Field: Tigers Cap Eventful Weekend With Top Marks

The South Pasadena High track and field team took part in a number of competitions and came away with improved times and marks during a busy weekend.
At the Cravon Gillespie Monrovia Invite, California Relays and Arcadia Distance Challenge, the well-traveled Tigers posted more top-10 all-time school marks, highlighted by junior Abigail Errington’s time of 4 minutes, 54.54 seconds in the 1,600-meter race, breaking her own record by nearly four seconds.
Tigers junior Saidbh Byrne moved up to No. 4 all-time in the 3,200 with her time of 11:14.64, and senior Mia Holden won her heat in the 400 in 57.20, moving to No. 5 in the school list, according to coach Mike Parkinson.
For the girls’ field competitions, junior Kayla Boozer, fresh off basketball success, won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 2 inches, which ranks No. 4 all-time in the program.
The girls’ 4×100 relay team of Jacqueline Sides, Lyla Keller, Avery Taylor and Holden recorded the sixth-best time in school history with 48.45 at the California Relays at Long Beach Wilson.
In boys, Tiger Michael Scarince broke his own freshman record in the 800 by nearly a full second with a time of 1:59.10. The boys 4×800 relay team of junior Peter Dickinson, junior Adam Ruiz, senior Keeran Murray and Scarince finished in 8:01.41, the third fastest time in SPHS history and eighth-best this year in the state.
Dickinson ran 41.17 in the 300 hurdles, and junior Leonard Kwak cleared a personal-record 12-0 in the pole vault. In the shot put, Tigers junior Omar Soufi threw for 51-3 to win the event.
South Pasadena swept all four divisions in its home meet against San Marino and Blair, with the girls’ 4×100 relay team of Sides, Keller, Taylor and Holden finishing in 48.23, a mark that is second best in school history.
