Boys’ Volleyball: SPHS Makes Strides at Nevada Tournament

The South Pasadena High School varsity boys’ volleyball competed in the Nevada Tournament on March 1 and 2, finishing with a 3-2 record.
The Tigers defeated Durango High of Las Vegas, Nevada, in three games, 16-25, 25-15, 15-13, in their tournament finale. South Pas also secured a pair of sweeps against Virgin Valley High of Mesquite, Nevada, 25-12, 25-17, and Desert Oasis High of Las Vegas, 25-23, 25-20. The Tigers suffered a pair of losses against American Leadership Academy of Gilbert, Arizona, 17-25, 18-25, and Catalina Foothills High of Tucson, Arizona, 25-23, 22-25, 7-15. Individual statistics were not reported to the Review.
South Pas picked up a four-game victory at Bellflower, 23-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-18, in a nonleague match on Feb. 28.
Junior James Dowd registered 11 kills and seven blocks, while junior Martin Walsh finished with nine kills, six digs, four blocks and one ace. Senior Nigel Mundara was credited with 15 assists and eight digs, while senior Ian Chang racked up 11 assists, 10 digs and one ace. Senior Kai Munoz produced 14 digs and four assists, while senior Ryan Estanislao recorded 13 digs and two assists. Junior Jack Pellerin tallied six kills, one block and one dig, while freshman Lorcan Swift finished with six kills, two digs and one block. Freshman Liam Johnson notched five kills, four blocks and one dig, while junior Jacob Chuang had six blocks, four kills and four digs. Sophomore Wyatt Morimoto-Woo collected two aces and one dig, while sophomore Kyle Kirchen chipped in one kill.
The Tigers (5-3 overall) will host Culver City for a nonleague match on March 11 at 4 p.m. before opening Rio Hondo League action against Monrovia on March 12.
