Baseball: South Pas Unable to Find Spark in League Opener

The South Pasadena High School varsity baseball team narrowly lost to visiting Covina 7-6 in a nonleague game on March 5.
Junior Leo Castillo went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while senior Elijah Garcia went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Senior Jesse Chavez and junior Jon Bracamonte each recorded a hit and an RBI, senior Griffin Johnson contributed a hit, two walks and a run, and senior Luke Riffle finished with a hit and a walk. Senior Devin Robinson walked twice, scored a pair of runs and stole a base, while sophomore Aaron Kawasaki walked twice and scored once.
Junior Gabe Vogel pitched three innings with four strikeouts, while junior Charlie Vogel struck out two batters across three innings on the mound.
The Tigers were shut out at Temple City 8-0 in their Rio Hondo League opener on Feb. 29.
Robinson went 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base, while junior Aidan St John and Riffle each tallied a base hit. Bracamonte pitched five innings with five strikeouts, while senior Owen Woodworth pitched an inning of relief with one strikeout.
South Pasadena suffered a 4-0 nonleague loss against visiting La Habra on Feb. 28.
Garcia registered three stolen bases, a hit and a walk, Bracamonte and Castillo each had a base hit, and Riffle walked once. Junior Ben Regan finished with three strikeouts across six innings on the mound, while Gabe Vogel pitched one inning of relief with two strikeouts.
South Pasadena (4-5 overall, 0-1 in league) will host San Marino for a league game on March 11 at 3:30 p.m. before visiting Monrovia on March 14.
