Baseball: South Pas Succumbs to Marshall in Extras

The South Pasadena High School varsity baseball team lost to visiting Marshall Fundamental of Pasadena 3-2 in an extra-inning nonleague game on Feb. 27.
Junior Gabe Vogel, who had a hit, an RBI and a walk at the plate, pitched four innings with five strikeouts, one unearned run, four walks and one hit. Junior Leo Castillo racked up eight strikeouts in five innings, allowing two unearned runs on five walks and one hit.
Senior Nolan Adams went 2-for-5 with a double, while sophomore Aaron Kawasaki went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Griffin Johnson registered a hit, a run, a stolen base and a walk, while junior Jon Bracamonte tallied a base hit and a walk. Junior Dylan Liu scored once, while seniors Elijah Garcia, Devin Robinson and Jesse Chavez each walked once.
The Tigers picked up a narrow 11-10 victory against visiting Glendale in a Dave Moore Tournament game on Feb. 24.
Johnson went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base, while Adams went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, a run and a walk. Robinson registered a double, three RBIs, two runs, a stolen base and a walk, while senior Luke Riffle went 2-for-3 with two runs. Garcia recorded a hit, two RBIs and a run, Bracamonte finished with a hit, an RBI and a run, and Vogel contributed a hit, an RBI and a walk. Chavez walked twice, scored a run and notched an RBI, Kawasaki walked once, scored a run and stole a base, and juniors Harley Arrieta, Ben Regan and Charles Esnault each stole a base. Senior Owen Woodworth pitched 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts, Castillo pitched one inning with one strikeout, and senior Tyler Vargas pitched 2/3 of an inning.
SPHS lost to visiting Cathedral High of Los Angeles 3-2 in a tournament game on Feb. 22.
Regan pitched six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Vogel struck out two batters in one scoreless inning of relief.
Kawasaki registered a triple, an RBI and a pair of walks, while Chavez contributed a hit, an RBI and a walk. Adams recorded a hit and a run, while Castillo and Bracamonte each tallied a base hit. Junior Nathan Olivarez scored a run and stole a base, while Johnson stole a pair of bases and walked once.
South Pas (4-2 overall) will host Covina for its Dave Moore Tournament finale on March 5 at 3 p.m. before hosting La Cañada for its Rio Hondo League opener on March 7.
