Kiwanis Club of South Pasadena Celebrates Century of Service

Local students have benefited from the Kiwanis Club of South Pasadena for 100 years through literacy programs, scholarships, mentoring leadership programs and the organization’s Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast.
The club will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a 100 Years of Service Dinner on Saturday, March 16, from 5-9 p.m. at Communal Food and Drink.
Over the past 100 years, the local Kiwanis Club has sponsored more than 600 kids in its sponsored high school leadership program (Key Club) and has helped more than 30,000 kids with 3,000 service projects and 700 fundraisers, said Ernie Arnold, the 2023-24 president.
“Our club currently sponsors Builders Club for middle school students and Key Club for high school students, and an Aktion club for adults living with disabilities, all to help our community’s kids thrive, prosper and grow,” Arnold said.
The Kiwanis Club of South Pasadena is known for its signature project, its Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast, which serves as both a community event and fundraiser for scholarships and service projects, such as a Reading Oasis for the Wellness Centers at both South Pasadena High School and South Pasadena Middle School. The club raises $25,000 every year to support the project by hosting fundraisers such as the Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast and See’s Candy sales. The club also supports the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses and the library summer reading program.
“Kids in the community need Kiwanis. We step in and provide support when other funding sources are eliminated,” Arnold said. “Many kids need meals on the weekends, shoes, athletic equipment, safety classes, books and backpacks. These are among the varied projects Kiwanis clubs support around the world. Kiwanis clubs sell pancakes and hold concerts, fairs and festivals to raise money to support our projects.”
