Fifth Graders Ready to Shine in ‘Descendants’

“It feels good being bad,” is not necessarily a sentence any adult wants to hear from a 10-year-old. However, for Christopher Kerrigen, director of this year’s fifth-grade musical, it comes with the territory in helping students bring beloved Disney characters to life in “Descendants: The Musical.”
This one-act musical bursting with comedy, and adventure, is a hilarious clash of cultures where the scions of Disney villains and their iconic hero counterparts have to learn to get along with each other at school.
Art imitates life, and just like in “Descendants,” students from different SPUSD elementary schools must learn to work together as a cast — creating new friendships and bonds prior to matriculating at the SPMS in the fall.
Fifth graders from all three elementary schools have been rehearsing since October and are eager to showcase characters they have brought to life.
SPEF’s fifth-grade production “Descendants: The Musical” will take the stage in the SPHS auditorium on these dates:

  • Friday, Feb. 2, 7:30 p.m. (Blue cast)
  • Saturday, Feb. 3, 4 p.m. (Blue cast)
  • Saturday, Feb. 3, 7:30 p.m. (Red cast)
  • Sunday, Feb. 4, 2 p.m. (Red cast)
    Tickets are available at
spef4kids.org/programs/5th- grade-musical/, with a livestream option also available.

First published in the January 26 print issue of the South Pasadena Review.
