South Pas Romps Monrovia for League Win

The South Pasadena High School varsity girls’ tennis team dominated Monrovia with a 17-1 victory in a Rio Hondo League match on Sept. 26.
No. 1 Maya Oniciuc secured a clean sweep with three consecutive 6-0 wins. No. 3 Emi Fong won a pair of sets with 6-1 and 6-0 scores, before alternating with Elizabeth Rosenberg, who added a 6-3 victory. No. 2 Gwendolyn Culbert also won a pair of sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Meryl Timmerman and Mailani Ramos-Platt delivered a flawless performance, sweeping their matches with a trio of 6-0 wins. The No. 2 pairing of Helena Gispurt and Claire Chen dominated with scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0. The No. 3 duo of Chloe Luong and Cleo Reeves also swept their matches with scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0.
South Pas (6-2 overall, 1-1 in league) will visit powerhouse San Marino for a league matchup on Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. before hosting Blair High of Pasadena on Oct. 5.

LCHS 13, SPHS 5
The Tigers suffered a loss in their league opener at La Cañada on Sept. 21.
No. 3 Fong won two sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-2. No. 1 Oniciuc won a set with a 6-1 score, while No. 2 Culbert also won a set with a score of 6-2. The No. 3 team of Luong and Reeves added a 6-1 victory.


SPHS 15, LA SALLE 3
The Tigers secured a convincing nonleague victory at La Salle College Preparatory in Pasadena on Sept. 19.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Isha Zafra and Claire Chen swept their sets 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2. The No. 2 pairing of Timmerman and Ramos-Platt won two sets, 6-0 and 6-4, before alternating with Gispurt and Leen Yassine, who added a 6-3 win. The No. 3 duo of Luong and Reeves also won two sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-0. Luong rotated with Sage Mawji and the new duo completed the sweep with a 6-4 win.
In singles, No. 1 Oniciuc swept her sets 6-3, 6-5 and 6-0. No. 3 Rosenberg won two sets, 6-1 and 6-3, while No. 2 Emi Fong won a set, 6-1.
