LAPD Finds No Bomb After Report

First published in the April 29 print issue of the South Pasadena Review.

A reported bomb threat at Arroyo Park last week amounted to nothing, law enforcement officials said.

The Los Angeles Police Department received a report of a suspicious device located at the park at around 10 a.m. Thursday, April 21, according to Sgt. Frank Preciado, a public information officer with the agency. LAPD was the responding agency because the specific location on the package, in the vicinity of San Ramon Drive, was in the Los Angeles portion of the park, most of which is otherwise within South Pasadena’s borders.

Nonetheless, South Pasadena residents were among those receiving mobile alerts to steer clear of the park while LAPD officers secured the area and brought in a bomb squad to evaluate the threat.

Ultimately, Preciado said officers located no explosive materials and there was no known threat identified at the park that afternoon. The incident report he was citing did not indicate what the suspicious device specifically was, although a public service announcement through the city of South Pasadena indicated that the report concerned an alleged claymore military explosive being planted behind a home in the park by a homeless man.

Officers with the South Pasadena Police Department assisted in traffic control and street closures in the immediate area while LAPD officers conducted their operation.
