Little League Concludes All-Star Competition

The South Pasadena Little League summer All-Star season was a successful one as its Juniors softball team captured the Section 3 championship and three baseball teams won district tournaments.
After claiming District 18 and Section 3 titles, the SPLL Juniors All-Star softball team competed in the California Little League Southern California Tournament. South Pasadena rallied with four runs in the sixth inning but fell short in a 10-9 loss.

The local squad collected nine hits in the high-scoring affair. Annika Selsby led the team with two hits and two runs batted in, and Sophia Atencio collected two hits and drove in one run. Reese Buckley had two RBI and Jolene Wu and Julianna Mostert each singled. Natalie Kan drove in a run and was dealt the loss in the pitcher’s circle, surrendering 10 runs on 12 hits and striking out 12 in 7 2/3 innings.

The SPLL Junior All-Star softball team recently won the Section 3 championship and competed in the Southern California regional tournament. The squad includes Sophia Atencio, Reese Buckley, Ana Dawson, coach Curtis Kan, Natalie Kan, Naiya Kim, Sydney Lee, Juliana Mostert, coach Robert Mostert, Annika Selsby, manager David Selsby, Natalie Wilson and Jolene Wu.


The SPLL 11-and-under All-Star team edged East Alhambra, 7-5, to win the District 18 title. The squad trailed 3-2 early in the contest but took the lead for good in the third with five runs scored. Evan Leyva tripled in two runs, Ronan Selsby then belted an RBI double, Max Aguis followed with an RBI single and Trent Tozer hit into a fielder’s choice that plated a runner.
Leyva was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Tyler Wilson also collected three hits. Jacob Ghaly was 2-for-4 and Maxwell Osorio contributed a hit.
South Pasadena Little League’s Junior All-Star baseball team was also successful in its district championship game, defeating Temple City American 8-5.
The team totaled 11 hits and was led by Gabe Vogel, who drove in three runs. Sam Rodriguez collected two hits, and Phil Malatesta, Alex Michels, Gavin Dwyer, Konrad Neu, Daniel Byun, Silvestre Quiroz and Ben Lee each contributed one hit.
