Magnet Schools Garner $15M Grant Amid Enrollment Spike

Pasadena magnet schools are catching the attention of local families. This year, three Pasadena schools have received increased funding through a five-year, $15 million grant awarded to the Pasadena Unified School District.
The U.S. Department of Education awarded the grant after a rigorous and competitive application process. The grant supports ongoing facility upgrades, in-depth teacher training, enhanced programs and additional course opportunities. Pasadena’s latest magnet grant funds Washington Elementary STEM Magnet School (TK-5), Longfellow Magnet (TK-5) and Eliot Arts Magnet (6-8).
Magnet schools are unique because they offer academic experiences that integrate students’ interests throughout an innovative curriculum. Schools adopt a thematic focus, such as an emphasis on STEM, the arts or language-learning.
“We know that linking learning experiences with student’s strengths and interests leads to meaningful connections and improved outcomes. Our goal is to continue to create an inspired academic experience where our students are engaged and graduate prepared for college and careers,” says Shannon Mumolo, project director for Pasadena Magnet Schools.
“The feedback from parents has been wonderful,” Mumolo added. “We see many families sending their second and third children to the same magnet schools as their older siblings.”
Pasadena introduced magnet programs in 2013 — and through several grants has been able to grow the programs over the past decade. In 2017, three other district schools were awarded a Magnet Schools Assistance Program grant and each has seen double- or triple-digit enrollment increases. PUSD Magnets have also earned distinction as Nationally Certified Demonstration Magnet schools.
Pasadena is an open enrollment district. Families have the option to apply to attend any PUSD magnet school. Siblings receive preferred entry into programs so that families can send their entire family to the same school. The first lottery applications for the 2024-25 school year are open Jan. 9-Jan. 26.
