SPHS Rebounds, Wins Consecutive League Matches

The South Pasadena High School varsity girls’ tennis team secured a 12-6 Rio Hondo League victory over visiting Temple City on Oct. 17.
No. 3 Emi Fong earned a convincing sweep with three consecutive 6-0 victories, while No. 2 Gwen Culbert won two sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-2. No. 1 Maya Oniciuc also won two sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-2 before alternating with Helena Gispurt, who added a 6-4 victory.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Isha Zafra and Claire Chen won two sets with identical 6-3 scores. The No. 2 tandem of Meryl Timmerman and Mailani Ramos-Platt won a set with a 6-2 score, while the No. 3 duo of Cleo Reeves and Chloe Luong added another 6-2 victory.
The Tigers (11-4 overall, 5-3 in league) will visit Blair High in Pasadena for a league match on Oct. 23 before sending individuals to compete in the Rio Hondo League Tournament on Oct. 25 and 26.

The Tigers routed host Monrovia in a league match on Oct. 12.
The No. 1 doubles team of Zafra and Chen swept their opponents with scores of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, while the No. 2 tandem of Oniciuc and Fong also swept with scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0. The No. 3 duo of Culbert and Reeves also swept their side by scores of 6-1, 6-3 and 6-0.
In singles play, No. 1 Gispurt won a pair of sets with identical 6-0 scores, while No. 3 Timmerman won two sets with scores of 7-5 and 6-0. No. 2 Ramos-Platt also won two sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-0 before rotating for Leen Yassine, who added a 6-2 victory.
