Doubles Play Propels SPHS Past Maranatha

The South Pasadena High School varsity girls’ tennis team dominated visiting Maranatha High of Pasadena 16-2 in a nonleague match on Sept. 14.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of co-captain Isha Zafra and Claire Chen swept their matches with scores of 6-4, 6-1 and 6-0. The No. 2 pairing of co-captain Maya Oniciuc and Emi Fong also secured a sweep, winning with scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1. The No. 3 tandem of Mailani Ramos-Platt and Chloe Luong won all three sets, as well, with scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0.
In singles play, No. 1 Gwendolyn Culbert dominated with scores of 6-4, 6-0 and 6-0. No. 2 Leen Yassine also won in straight sets with 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 scores. Meanwhile, No. 3 Sage Mawji contributed with a 6-1 set win.
South Pas (4-1 overall) will host Monrovia for a Rio Hondo League match on Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. before visiting Temple City on Sept. 28.

SPHS 12, GLENDORA 6
The Tigers secured a nonleague victory against Glendora on Sept. 12 as a pair of doubles teams posted sweeps.
The No. 2 team of Meryl Timmerman and Ramos-Platt swept their matches by scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, while the No. 3 duo of Cleo Reeves and Luong also won in straight sets with scores of 7-5, 6-1 and 7-5. Meanwhile, the No. 1 pairing of Chen and Zafra contributed with a 6-0 set win.
In singles action, No. 1 Oniciuc won a pair of sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-0, No. 2 Culbert secured two sets, both with scores of 6-1, and No. 3 Fong added a 6-0 set win.
