STEAM Students Compete in Design Challenge

First published in the Feb. 4 print issue of the South Pasadena Review.

The Cardboard Arcade Design Challenge is a Capstone Project for students in the 7th grade STEAM Design & Modeling class at South Pasadena Middle School.
Students apply skills they have developed throughout the semester to design a project, model it in TinkerCAD, construct a prototype, create a rules poster and test the creations by playing their games.
The class follows the Project Lead the Way curriculum with hands-on, real-world activities, projects and problems. The curriculum helps students understand how the knowledge and skills they develop in the classroom may be applied in everyday life. Students work through all the stages of the user-centered design process developed by the the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford, also known as d.school, using skills such as measurement, 3D modeling, 3D printing and graphic design.
Inspired by the 2012 viral video Caine’s Arcade, the Cardboard Arcade Design Challenge is in its fifth year at SPMS.
