Friends of the Library Updates Mission Language

The Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library have updated their Articles of Incorporation for the first time in nearly 50 years.
The Friends held a special membership meeting June 5 after consulting with an attorney to change language that might limit the scope of what the group could do in the future.
“Most organizations have a larger scope to their articles of incorporation,” President Kevin O’Neil told those gathered in the library’s conference room and participating via Zoom.
One proposed change drew comments. It replaced wording that the group would engage in “educational and nonprofit activities” with language that could permit awarding scholarships while maintaining a focus on “charitable, literary, educational and other purposes.”
The phrase “other purposes” could include events like the Restoration classical concert series the Friends sponsor in the library’s community room throughout the year.
The board agreed to other wording changes suggested by the attorney. The revised articles were approved at the end of the 30-minute meeting.

First published in the June 14 print issue of the South Pasadena Review.
