Chabad of South Pasadena is holding a “Pre-Chanukah Bash” on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 4:30 p.m.
The festivities will be at the Chabad Jewish Center at 722 Fremont Ave. in South Pasadena.
Chanukah is the Jewish holiday, also known as the Festival of Lights, and this year will be celebrated from the evening of Dec. 7-15.
Chabad of South Pasadena Rabbi Dovid Harlig said that the Chabad Kids Club is offering activities that include making a menorah, which holds the candles signifying the eight days of the holiday.
There will be games including Chanukah bingo, and the more traditional spinning of a dreidel, which is a kind of top with Hebrew letters on each side, and eating Chanukah candies, called “gelt” which are usually wrapped in foil and look like coins.
Chanukah commemorates the rededication of the second Temple after a group of Jews — led by Judas Maccabee — defeated the much larger army of Greeks and Syrians. The Jews only had oil to light the Temple’s Menorah, but the oil lasted for eight days.
Harlig said that people should RSVP online at JewishSouthPasadena.com/JKC. The cost of the pre-Chanukah bash is $15 per child and $54 per family.
